In an effort to gather for Dear Suburbia, and to get wild as far south as humans dwell, What Youth sent a trip to New Zealand with Dane Reynolds, Dion Agius, Craig Anderson and Conner Coffin.

They did a bit of roughing it, which led to serious soul search-and-destroying, and they froze, and got skunked at first, and slept in an abandoned church, Craig lost his mind once again, they skated, surfed and were stalked by local adolescents. But in the end [...]

  • Hi, we're here about the surf trip.
  • Everyone loves an airport.
  • Finally to Dunedin on the South Island, home base for the first phase of the trip. Craig is driving.
  • The Penguin Cult.
  • The charming villa where everyone first began to go mad. Spirits still high.
  • Look closely. This is traveling.
  • And this is what traveling is for. But we're a ways off from all that yet. The Penguin Cult story continues in Chapter 2.

Flights landed late into Auckland from the Gold Coast, like 2 a.m. Conner was already there waiting. It was cold and it was raining and both of those conditions would persist, as a reminder that of all the exotic global outposts to which a modern airline will fly these days they’d chosen New Zealand: home to sheep, jokes about people fucking sheep that might not be jokes really, one badass rugby organization with a sweet name, precipitation, frequent [...]

DEAR SUBURBIA, PREQUEL IV DANE, CRAIG, CONNER & DION IN NEW ZEALAND

These nine minutes are shaken from two long, surreal weeks of misadventure into parts of the world so far south they bend and warp and maybe going there makes you bend and warp a little too, because the boys sure did, especially at first when the waves didn't show and they didn't show and didn't show. Eventually Dane, Craig, Dion and Conner had to make a call to move or keep waiting. That night they went out, hard, as a [...]
