OFF BEAT: ANDREW DOHENY A WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SERIES
Mon

Jan

One of the most entertaining things there is to do on this planet is ask Andrew Doheny questions. Any kind of questions. Your answer will be delivered and plucked from his mind the same way a Lotto ball is: completely at random.  Whatever pops up is what you get. There's nothing tricky, he's not playing any games, his agent isn't off camera. Andrew Doheny decides for himself. And that is a beautiful thing.

In today's episode of Off Beat we popcorn-question Andrew for an afternoon in between surfs around his house. The results are pure and hanging with him was nothing short of rad. [...]

DEAR YOUTH NEVER TRUST A THOUGHT THAT DIDN'T COME FROM WALKING

PHOTO: Chenoweth

That’s a quote by an old madman by the name of Friedrich Nietzsche. He’s an existential pioneer and had one hell of a dark passenger throughout his life. But the man sure did drop some wisdom while he was here.

I bring this up as a bit of a postmortem from a pretty serious “walk” we've just returned from. A car was driven from our current location in Orange County up to an island off British Columbia. Along the way we skated, surfed, forgot, remembered, danced, drove, brooded, exclaimed, drank and moved ridiculous distances without sleep just to see what it would feel like to not know which side of consciousness we were on. While nature bloomed and whizzed by outside the window, our brains swelled with too much alcohol and no computer screens to save us. But now we know what it feels like to skate Burnside and Orcas. Surf frozen Canada and wash it down with Lucky beer served by friendly small town granola girls. At times we must have looked like miserable bum fights, at other times we were wetsuit clad with big stoke grins, alive and leaving frozen tracks on frozen waves we'd never knew existed. And we found all moods that exist between those two extremes along the way. [...]

WINTER LISTENING WITH DAMON WAY A COLLABORATION FOR WHAT YOUTH QUARTERLY, ISSUE THREE
Thu

Jan

Damon Way stands in his kitchen before an espresso machine. The kitchen is on the middle floor of his modern three-story house in San Francisco's SoMa district and Damon is serious, for the moment, because he's making coffee, correctly.

He grinds a small handful of beans. The pantry in his home normally stocks Blue Bottle, Sightglass or Fourbarrel roasted walking distance from Damon's door. He checks the grounds for coarseness. With a countertop scale he weighs them, skims some, weighs, skims and weighs until the measure comes right. He's punctilious, as if making a bomb. Damon tamps and pulls a shot, steams almond milk, adds honey and a cinnamon dusting and then excuses himself to deliver the latte to his wife upstairs.

Above the ritual a Slowdive record plays from a large turntable in the adjacent living room that Damon designed. Slowdive is good. Perfect maybe. [...]

SINCERELY, SUBURBIA A WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL FILM
Wed

Jan

Sincerely Suburbia is our final salute to a film and a moment in time we're rather fond of. And damn is it a pretty little thing. Shot around the globe in 2012, this is an almost 10-minute film pulled from the Dear Suburbia cutting room floor. But being that Kai is notoriously picky during editing his films, it doesn't feel like an after thought at all. It stars Dane Reynolds, Kolohe Andino, Conner Coffin, Jay Davies and Mitch Coleborn with cameos by Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow and Cory Lopez.  [...]

PHOTOS FROM SINCERELY SUBURBIA TAKEN DURING FILMING FOR THE WHAT YOUTH FILM SINCERELY SUBURBIA

Kai is notoriously picky when it comes to clips that make it into his film. His cutting room floor is filled with puddles of banger clips and rad shit that just doesn't fit into the films. Which is a bummer, but only until he releases stuff like this. Tomorrow we'll be premiering Sincerely Suburbia, the final farewell to an incredible film, year and chapter in our lives.

So as we sign off from this chapter and film with Sincerely Suburbia, we'd like to remind you that this is the beginning of the most exciting part of what we do: hitting the road and starting all over again. Which we're doing immediately, already filling hard drives with visions of late nights and long flight and tons of surfing. Don't forget to come along every day, right here at What Youth. After the jump you'll enjoy an overwhelming amount of images shot by Nate Lawrence, Dion Agius and Craig Anderson. [...]

He's a soft spoken playboy, a madman when it gets big, has a name that's fun to say, and he can punt with the best of them. Balaram Stack answers the tough questions in this episode of Off Beat.
FAIRLY NORMAL: EVAN GEISELMAN A WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SERIES

Compared to most of humanity, a surfer's existence is pretty odd. But to us, it's all we know. Fairly Normal is a new series that chronicles the somewhat peculiar domestic situations surfers have come to find normal around the globe, giving you a pretty interesting look at what we consider normal.

In this installment we hang with Evan Geiselman in Hawaii and he shows us that vicious forehand whip of his and once again proves that there is something about Floridians and Pipeline. A cameo is provided by our friend Jack Freestone. [...]

SINCERELY, SUBURBIA COMING TO WHAT YOUTH NEXT WEEK
Fri

Jan

In celebration of Dear Suburbia's success in 2012 (2012 Surfer Poll Film of the Year, Dane Reynolds' Performance of the Year etc), Kai has made a beautiful sign off short film called Sincerely, Suburbia that we'll be premiering only on What Youth next week. Kai is notoriously picky and critical when editing his films and the amount of rad stuff left on the cutting room floor is crazy. We're quite certain you'll enjoy it.

It will be the final sign off from Dear Suburbia and will signify the end of that film and the beginning of Kai and What Youth's next run of films, projects, magazines and trips and what promises to be a wild and lucky 2013. [...]

WHAT YOUTH MEMOIRS TO BEGIN, BEGIN. WELCOME TO 2013.

What Youth was born in 2012, and it makes us misty thinking about all the fun we had last year. But it's only just begun. We currently just got home from a magical spirit quest into the rough and tumble Pacific Northwest and are packing those same bags that were filled with jackets and 5/4/3's and skateboards in exchange for trunks and sunscreen and heading for somewhere much, much warmer. Our bed's were nice last night, but it's time to keep moving. [...]

WHAT YOUTH'S TOP FIVE VIDEOS OF 2012 NUMBER 1: WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL VIDEO

Dec

It's short and sonic youth. This clip was the first vision we released of What Youth eight months ago. In retrospect it's still our favorite. It's hello, thank you and fuck you all in one giant awkward grandma hug. It's the way we know you'd want it. So long and farewell 2012, Auld Lang Syne and all that shit, we'll see you in 2013. The boys are in Vancouver for the eve, give us a call if you're young, nasty and radical...but mostly young. House party?

Love,

What Youth [...]
