ANYTHING SING DELETED SCENES / AUSTRALIA

Australia went a bit brown on us this year during filming for Anything Sing, but it didn't stop the waves. Non stop rain left brown water but awoke a few sleepy little peaks that we're happy we saw. This episode from filming for the movie features Mick Fanning, Paul Fisher, Luke Davis and Nick Rosza running around Australia. We found quite a few ramps and pits amidst the brown water this year. And you can't hang with these guys and not laugh.

And remember we'll be premiering the movie in it's entirety next Wednesday May 1st here, and then we'll be offering the film for free download at Reef.com May 2nd. [...]

WHAT YOUTH RECOMMENDS 001 SOME INSPIRATION FOUND WHILE MAKING WHAT YOUTH ISSUE 4

"You can double the length of your iPhone battery easily — just put the fucking thing down."

Kai said this the other day. And while it's trite to be the person bickering about all the cell phone zombies wandering the planet, we found that to be good advice. And since we spend so much time searching the stacks, snapping photos and talking with inspiring people, we thought we'd give you a glimpse at some things that that made us whistle "Beginning to See The Light" as we made Issue 4 (out next month).

After the jump is a a good afternoon's worth of rad shit we doubt you knew existed. [...]

THIS IS US: AUSTRALIA PART 4 OF THE WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SERIES

There is a lot of chaos cluttering our brains these days. Texts prevent pondering. Snapchats prevent reverie. Twitter prevents epiphany. Instagram prevents memory. And thunderstorms prevent brainstorms. And on and on.

It’s difficult to get true commitment — let alone ponder the fact that beyond our instantaneously gratified society there are canyons in the oceans where vampire fish live; or meditate for a moment on the fact that there is space. How can one ponder space when it’s nearly impossible to initiate a real conversation? Warrant a look in the eyes or an earnest response? It is easy to track someone today, yes. It is hard, however, to elicit anything of substance as we walk around like the texting dead.

Which leads us to the motivation behind this trip we did to the coast and why we chose these surfers: Creed McTaggart, Chippa Wilson, Ryan Callinan and Dillon Perillo. We wanted to remind ourselves of something. Something about existence. About humanity. About surfing. This is part four of This is Us: Australia and we hope you like it. We got a house, drank beers, went surfing, drove around, fucked around and talked about chicks. Ryan wore his wetsuit the whole damn trip and Creed had a few cigarettes. Dillon read poetry and Chippa applied fresh Fox stickers for the first time. It's wasn't always deep and meaningful (although at times it was) but it was fun, and this is what it looked like.

Coming Next Monday: A bonus section from This is Us: Australia featuring outtakes from the trip that will ultimately prove we've lost it. [...]

SUPER FAMOUS NOW A CONVERSATION WITH JACK FREESTONE

PHOTOS: Blake Myers

Currently, Jack Freestone is probably most notably known as the guy dating Alana Blanchard. But it turns out he's got a lot more shit going on than the cutest chick in the game under his arm. He's a two time world junior champion and he's got a career performance in Dear Suburbia. Kai recently sat down with Jack for a beverage and a chat for What Youth Issue 3 prior to Jack making the greatest PR move in pro surfing history. We love Jack a lot, despite the fact that he now spends more time looking for reception to Skype "Cookie" than he does fun waves, but that's just us being dirty green with envy.  Jacky Boy, we love you.

After the jump is our chat with Jack as well as a lovely pictorial for your amusement. [...]

ANYTHING SING DELETED SCENES / MOROCCO

Filmed and edited by Victor Pakpour

It takes a long time to get to Morocco — like 24 hours sometimes, and the chances are pretty high you'll lose some bags, get sweaty and frustrated and have to sleep on the ground in a foreign airport. And this trip was no exception, but we love that shit and it makes traveling memorable. After you watch this — the first glimpse of some deleted scenes of our new film with Reef: Anything Sing — you'll see why we love it: big glassy right points, exotic and unique culture and the cluster that is the road.

Today we're excited to show you some deleted scenes from the movie starring Luke Davis, Ford Archbold, Nick Rozsa and Beau Foster. And we also want to remind you that we'll be playing the film in it's entirety here on the site May 1st, and then offering it to you for free download on May 2nd at Reef.com.

The West Coast premiere tour of Anything Sing kicks off Thursday night in Encinitas with a big night at Le Papagayo Restaurant. The movie will play and there will be live music, a DJ and a good amount of dancing, libations and food, so if you're around come hang out. After the jump are the rest of the West Coast tour dates. See you there! [...]

COLLECTED THOUGHTS 040 WHAT YOUTH ISSUE 4 IS CURRENTLY BEING FINISHED. THESE GIRLS AND MANY OTHER THINGS ARE IN IT

PHOTO: Sam Nolan

During our stay in Australia this year, we linked up with photographer Sam Nolan from Byron Bay to shoot very fashionable photos with very sexy Australian girls. Amid the human mosh pit that takes residency on the Gold Coast during the Quiksilver Pro, we managed to slip into a dive of a motel and get poolside. The motel was an awkward, musty dive of a place. Old men watched daytime TV in the lobby, which was littered with VHS videos and musty board game boxes. All was mostly still before we got there.

Sam shot the girls for us on a beast of a camera: a Mamiya Rb67, which shoots Polaroid film, looks like an ancient weapon and weighs as much as a tank. After shooting only 30 frames dripping with sex appeal, we got out of the pool, sat in a booth, had a drink and walked out. Still dripping wet. What Youth Issue 4 is out next month. [...]

We're all different. We're all the same. It's all fucking good. Life is many things. And this is us: moody, happy, sweaty, ripping, reading, writing and psyched as we wanna be, roaming through Australia. Part three of four.
