ON, PRANCER YADIN, BACK TO SKIPPING ON TWO HEALTHY ANKLES
Tue

May
For too much of the last nine months Yadin was dry, out of the water, nursing an ankle he broke in Japan filming Dear Suburbia. During the downtime he renovated his house, procreated and got healthy, and now he's mended and back on surfboards, going fast and high and playing chicken with the flats.

This is Yadin at home in Santa Barbara.

DEAR SUBURBIA, PREQUEL IV DANE, CRAIG, CONNER & DION IN NEW ZEALAND

These nine minutes are shaken from two long, surreal weeks of misadventure into parts of the world so far south they bend and warp and maybe going there makes you bend and warp a little too, because the boys sure did, especially at first when the waves didn't show and they didn't show and didn't show. Eventually Dane, Craig, Dion and Conner had to make a call to move or keep waiting. That night they went out, hard, as a [...]
CONVERSATIONS WITH DILLON, VOL. II SOCIAL NETWORKING. SECOND IN A SERIES

We’ve been hanging with Dillon Perillo a bunch lately to film some pieces and he’s such a surreal conversationalist. Sometimes his lips move and you think, “This person belongs at MIT,” and other times you think, “This person belongs somewhere safe where there’s nothing hot or sharp.” But we always have a nice time with Dillon. We grabbed some bits of conversation off the floor leftover from filming. This is what it’s like to talk with him.

SICK LITTLE PUSHPINS THE WHERES OF DEAR SUBURBIA,
Wed

May
This is the photographic version of that tiny plastic sample spoon they use at ice cream parlors to let you taste vanilla bean. It's a sample,  small but good, hey, damn good, so good your mouth calls up a double scoop before your mind can say no, and soon you've inhaled this whole frozen pile of creamy diabetic American bliss.

Less metaphorically this is a look at some of the filming locations from Dear Suburbia, more or less, vague enough to [...]
HOOLIHAN FISH RIDERS FUN, FORM, FILM AND FUNCTION. DISCUSS

We just thought this was funny. More car banter in the desert with Craig, Mitch and Kai.

Kai: Oh that wind, we had an hour of it. We missed it. It just came and went.

Craig: I know, that was so heavy.

Mitch: It’s gonna be a light and banging wind right now.

Kai: What happens if you just go mad on the Merlot, Mitch? It could be your thang.

Craig: I’m kinda bugging out on the little 5’4”.

DESERT LOONY LOOKS LIKE THIS
Thu

May
Craig, Chippa and Mitch find themselves at a sharp cracked toenail on the foot of the earth. It's cold and hot with reef and sharks. Coming was loony, staying is too, but the waves are loonier still and pretty much empty and there's nothing the boys can do but go a little loony themselves. So they do, and here it is, with our comments.

  • This shows my level and skill of photography — a nice crooked horizon. I’d fix it up on Photoshop or whatever but I don't know how to do that yet. I do remember being in bit of a rush, in my wetsuit mid-surf after snapping a craft. Sweet wave nonetheless. Myself, Chippa and Mitch having a ball of a time in the uncrowded lineup somewhere in the Australian desert.
  • Haha another crooked horizon, Kai doing his thing.
  • The desert jet-streams were like nothing I’d ever seen. You could see them across the entire pretty sky.
  • Me drinking a Coopers pale ale. We did that a lot down there, long hot days. I think Kai or Mitch stole my camera for this picture.
  • Ghostly rock formations out in the middle of nowhere, such a crazy mysterious vibe down there. It blows my mind how rocks are formed like that.
  • Chippa wandering in the desert dunes.
  • I think he's found something.
  • Little weird ugly lizard guy with no tail. We would drive past these little dudes every day and they would arch up and get angry. We stopped to say sorry.
  • This is in a graveyard. I'm not sure if it’s weird or not to take photos of graveyards. I hope it’s fine, no disrespect to those laid to rest.

Craig Rodney Anderson shot these photos on black-and-white film during our trip to the Australian desert, then captioned them via email from the road on another What Youth trip, to Mexico by way of Italy and Portugal. Craig is youth on the fucking run and his shot of Kai (No. 2 in the slideshow) belongs in a thousand-dollar TASCHEN hardback. It’s framed here on the wall in our studios.
