FAIRLY NORMAL: DILLON PERILLO A WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SERIES
Fri

"Waiting in line at an amusement park is like going through the airport TSA line 20 times to go on a variety of 20 second plane rides."

Dillon feels guilty. For existing. And especially for existing as a professional surfer, born and raised and currently residing in Malibu, California. But he has a sick style, a heart of gold and Kelly Slater once told us that he thinks Dillon is highly underrated. And we think so too. If he can get through his psychological hangups with existence and the pressure that the late writer Henry Miller puts on him, he has the potential to be one of California's most stylish contributions to surfing.

We spent some time with Dillon at home in search of some good old fashioned American amusement in this episode of Fairly Normal.

DEAR YOUTH EVERY WALL A DOOR AND DON'T SAY SHARK
Thu

I have a friend who lives in South Africa. He ends all his e-mails with the statement: Every wall a door and don't say shark. It's a mix of local folklore from the group of laborer/friends he surfs with, mixed with a bit of his own philosophy. Apparently surfing in a community known for having more than it's fair share of shark attacks will inspire a bit of mysticism between surfers. He believes it's all part of the balance that keeps South Africa's coast so wild.

I mention this because we've had more conversations about sharks the past few weeks than I can remember. And since I was in third grade — as most kids are I'm sure — I have been obsessed with sharks. In the most nerdy way. It was borderline obsessive. Once, when I was 8, I sat down with a pencil and paper and wrote 15 pages off the top of my head on everything knew about sharks. There was no assignment for this. I just needed to let it out. This is not the climax of the story I promise.

Last week Dane Reynolds came by and we were talking about spots for a couple upcoming surf trips. A location was thrown out that Dane immediately doubted, "Can you even surf there and not get attacked by a shark?" No one really knew. It was sharky as fuck. (Continued after the jump.) [...]

This life is short. This life is long. The vast and deep sea that is the Internet greatly increases both of these boring statements. It’s up to you on how you use it. Which holes you crawl into. Which buttons you push. Or what experiences you actually have. It’s always up to you. But seeing’s that you’ve continued to support and follow us, we’re quite certain there are things we come across that you will enjoy.

Which leads us to why we created What Youth Recommends: To offer some of the more fruitful searches we’ve had during our never-ending quest for inspiration, experience, creativity, entertainment and motivation.

And while our number one reason for existence at What Youth is to entertain and inspire through original content brought to you by the countless interesting personalities, trips, surfing, skating, shooting, documenting, writing and living that we do, we often look to introduce and inspire you through some of the people who inspire us as well. Today we’re offering a variety of rabbit holes to jump in. Enjoy the void.

After the jump are a bunch of things we have collected, watched, read, searched, forgot and/or remembered over the last few days. If you have any What Youth Recommendations for us, email us at hello@whatyouth.com with the heading WY Recommends. [...]

COLLECTED THOUGHTS 041 CRAIG ANDERSON AND OCCY, FILMING FOR SLOW DANCE, SOUTH COAST AUSTRALIA, 2013

"Those boys have some epic tales..." said Craig of his recent trip to the South Coast of Australia with Occy and Matt Hoy. Later this week we'll dig into some of those tales and begin chronicaling the final few months before Craig releases his new film, Slow Dance, which will be released this summer.

Craig has literally criss-crossed the globe like six times making this flick, sometimes darting for a swell, sometimes hunkering down for weeks until there is a swell. Sometimes never getting a swell. During our recent trip to Australia I remember standing next to Craig at a bar and chatting. I then saw him again at the same bar three days later. "What have you been up to?" I asked.

"Well, I went to Tahiti for two days...just got back," he chuckled. Sneaky two days in Tahiti and right back.

This most recent trip in Australia is one of the final installments and from the looks and sounds of it, there was no shortage of story time. Occy was filming Craig on a Handy Cam. Matt Hoy was sinking beers with Mick Lowe and the old boys were having a hell time reminiscing.

We'll have more behind the scenes of Craig's film later this week. [...]

We chased swells. Ran through terminals. Got dirty. Got loose. Made flights. Missed a few. Had a close call in Casablanca on our way to Morocco. Scored. Got skunked. Broke fins, boards and hearts. It was perfect. And now it's a film which you can watch above. And if you like what you see, head over to Reef.com/AnythingSing right now and download the whole film, in HD. For free.

Anything Sing was shot on location in Morocco, Australia, Mexico, Indonesia and Hawaii. It stars Luke Davis, Nick Rozsa, Mick Fanning, Conner Coffin, Beau Foster, Ford Archbold and Paul Fisher with Alana Blanchard.  [...]

THIS IS US: JERK OFF TAPES THIS IS AN ABSTRACT PRESENTATION TAKEN FROM OUR HANDY CAMS DURING FILMING FOR THIS IS US: AUSTRALIA

Surf culture isn't polished. It's not cut out for primetime. And anyone who's ever chucked surfboards into the back of a van knows what type of conversations go down on surf trips. We have all the ...lost videos and watch them to this day. And while we hope you enjoyed This Is Us: Australia and all the good surfing and poetic shots and cutaways, we had to sign off with something a touch more..ummm, raw. This was inspired by creepy, shoulder-mount cams from the '90s. Hit play and do remember to fuck around as often as you can. We're surfers. And we're lucky. And this is a surf trip. Be sure to listen for Dillon Perillo's very candid confession... [...]

ANYTHING SING DELETED SCENES / AUSTRALIA

Australia went a bit brown on us this year during filming for Anything Sing, but it didn't stop the waves. Non stop rain left brown water but awoke a few sleepy little peaks that we're happy we saw. This episode from filming for the movie features Mick Fanning, Paul Fisher, Luke Davis and Nick Rosza running around Australia. We found quite a few ramps and pits amidst the brown water this year. And you can't hang with these guys and not laugh.

And remember we'll be premiering the movie in it's entirety next Wednesday May 1st here, and then we'll be offering the film for free download at Reef.com May 2nd. [...]
