ALBEE LAYER'S FIVE THIRTY NINE LOOK AT THIS. LOOK HOW MUCH HE SPINS

Not to get worked up and mouth off but this is so much spinning, more than we’re used to all at once by a good half turn. It happened in Western Australia at a rude shallow reef where trying airs is stupid and Albee was out with Matt Meola and John John, trying airs.

We saw the photos, looked again, counted the spins, and then called Albee to invite him into our studios. We turned on [...]
COLLECTED THOUGHTS 001 YOUTH ON THE RUN: BARBADOS, BEGINNING NEXT WEEK

This is John John Florence by the ghost of an Olympic pool at an abandoned resort in the parish of St. Lucy near the northern tip of Barbados, and what a useless cavity in the ground has he got here.

The walls are too vertical to skate, there’s no water to ease the heat, there’s no European tourist on a poolside chaise turning sexual brown, there’s just strong wrong wind and cracked cement and an insistent homeless man trying to [...]
DO THE FROG HOUSE A VISIT TO NEWPORT’S LITTLE CURIOSITY SHOP WITH TEAM RIDERS FORD ARCHBOLD AND ANDREW DOHENY

This surf shop is unusual because it's not a T-shirt store posing as a surf shop, as most are, but rather it’s an adolescent clubhouse dive bar posing as a surf shop, and it does a good imitation until about six o'clock when the cans come out. Then it stops posing as anything and it’s just a loose local hangout with surf gear on the floor, for sale.

The Frog House is in Newport Beach, California and it’s been there [...]
COLLECTED THOUGHTS 002 CRAIG ANDERSON BETWEEN THE BARS

Kai took this photo of Craig a little before 1 a.m. in Brooklyn, New York. They’re leaving the strange party they wandered into after a Dirty Beaches show at Williamsburg’s Glasslands Gallery — truly they did, they sauntered all Australian through some odd open side door and into someone’s loft, where a Japanese band played and they were fed cake and keg beer and luckily weren’t murdered at all.

Of this Kai remembered little until the [...]

This is the film's collected cast — including, you'll notice, your favorite surfer. There he is.

But if he isn't, if none of these fourteen is your favorite, watch Dear Suburbia start to finish and by the end you'll have a new favorite, and here he'll be.

More from the many someones of Dear Suburbia in the first issue of What Youth Quarterly and in the film itself, which premieres August 2012 in California. Treat yourself to Letters From [...]
CONVERSATIONS WITH DILLON, VOL. IV PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE. FOURTH IN A SERIES

We’ve been hanging with Dillon Perillo a bunch lately to film some pieces and he’s such a surreal conversationalist. Sometimes his lips move and you think, “This person belongs at MIT,” and other times you think, “This person belongs somewhere safe where there’s nothing hot or sharp.” But we always have a nice time with Dillon. We grabbed some bits of conversation off the floor leftover from filming. This is what it’s like to talk with him.

Here he [...]
I USED TO RIDE BAREBACK THE HOUSE AND HOME AND SURFING OF JAY DAVIES, WEST AUSTRALIAN
Fri

Halfway between Yallingup, where Taj Burrow's from, and a town called Dunsborough, there's a cottage tucked into the bush where Jay Davies lives alone.

Men in London and New York and Los Angeles, with fine suits and big salaries, have breakdowns and leave it all behind to find what Jay has here. From his veranda you can sit and throw a rock at all that's right with Western Australia, the waves, the wine, wide open space.

Jay took us in for [...]
COLLECTED THOUGHTS 003 DANE REYNOLDS ON PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

May
This is Dane on the train to Osaka, in Japan.

Osaka is about an hour from its airport and our exit flight left the next day, and as none of us had been to Osaka we decided to ride in and see the sights. The city turns out to be rad, like a smaller Tokyo, less intense and with room to breathe.

We went straight to a bar.

Bar, bar, drink, bar, drink, the night wore on. Karaoke was unavoidable. [...]
