DEAR YOUTH CHIPPA WILSON AND DILLON PERILLO FILMING FOR THIS IS US: AUSTRALIA

There was a skatepark next to the bowler's club we ate dinner at during our recent trip to Australia. It was empty all the time and every evening before dark (and often into the dark thanks to our Subaru's headlights) we would eat chicken schnitzel's, grab some beers and roll around for a few hours, which is exactly what's happening above. Thats' Dillon punting and Chippa setting up a new board.

Since we've been home, the editing bay has been ablaze. Kai is finishing off This Is Us: Australia, a new series that will premiere April 1 (next Monday) right here, starring Creed McTaggart, Ryan Callinan, Chippa Wilson and Dillon Perillo. We're also putting the final touches on Anything Sing, which will be out exclusively on What Youth May 1st, and will be available for free download at Reef.com on May 2nd. We're also going to be premiering it up and down the California coast at the end of April, and if you're lucky enough to be at Bells for the Rip Curl Pro this week, there's a sneaky screening going on down there too.

Today's Monday but it feels like Friday, lot's of good stuff coming your way. Spread the word. [...]

OFF BEAT: NICK ROZSA A WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SERIES
Fri

Now here is a captivating human. We didn't know Nick Rozsa that well prior to the last few months, but thanks to our opportunity to work on Anything Sing with Reef, we've gotten to travel across the globe with him — and we got to know him real quick. He's become quite an interesting specimen along the way, offering all his moods and opinions. His surfing is world-class, seriously one of the best surfers we've had the pleasure of working with, and his personality: well, it's straight out of Ventura. And we love that. It is with great pleasure that we introduce you to Nick Rozsa.  [...]

SHANE DORIAN: A YOUTH ON THE RUN IN FRANCE, CIRCA 1994 WE ASKED SHANE TO TAKE US BACK TO HOSSEGOR, FRANCE.

There was a time in surfing (and this wasn't long ago) before there were surf team managers,"handlers," full-time video guys, webcasts, board caddies, managers or agents. And during this time, surfers still managed to travel the globe together, renting cars and houses, making food on their own, living the dream abroad. During that time they competed in contests (which very few people saw) and scored the best waves and times of their lives. They also managed to put out some damn fine surf cinema between as well if our memory serves us correct (thanks Taylor). This "rogue" lifestyle was life on tour in 1994. We got nostalgic one day and wanted to know what it was like to be a youth, on the run, in France, say 1994. So, we called our hero and asked him about it.

After the jump, Shane takes us back. (Look for the full interview in What Youth Issue 3, on sale now in the shop.) [...]

OFF BEAT: LUKE DAVIS A WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SERIES

As we said before, we thought we knew this dude. He's had flawless style and a public profile since he was arcing around San Clemente alongside Kolohe and all the other San Clemente gremlins at age 12. Nice kid. Nice family. Nice NSSA results, etc. But now he's grown up. With tats. And power. Vibes. And a major role in our new film Anything Sing. We thought it'd be fun to ask him a few things while we were in Australia. Mostly things he wasn't expecting.  [...]

For this collaboration with our friends at the California design studio Create x Destroy, we've paired two of our favorite things about skateboarding and art: Grant Brittain's classic photography and Natas Kaupas' unique skate and graphic style. We've piled all this radness onto one super limited run of 50 one-of-a-kind shirts that will combine the iconic shot of Natas with his super sick handwriting of What Youth.

The 50 shirts on on sale right now in the What Youth shop, so hurry.

Natas on the Grant Brittain photo: "That's Mark Gonzales' old girlfriend Hillary sitting on top of the wall. Mark I were both teenagers. I didn't have my driver's license, and Mark didn't have a car, so Hillary drove us down to the South Bay to meet with Steve Rocco. Steve took us to this spot, which I believe is Redondo High School." INTRODUCING: ANYTHING SING THE NEW FILM FROM REEF AND WHAT YOUTH

Everything around us blinks, rings, sings, shouts, distracts, vibrates, reminds, likes, comments and downloads. The chaos and beauty of the world is overshadowed by technological distractions and tweets that possess no lasting significance outside the screen they’re displayed.

Anything Sing is our attempt to rise above that chaos by creating our own environments and settings. On different surfaces. New canvases. On concrete. On walls. On water. On arms, with ink. Permanently. Like moments.

Starring Luke Davis, Nick Rozsa, Conner Coffin, Mick Fanning, Beau Foster, Ford Archbold, Shane Dorian and many more. Anything Sing will be premiered at a variety of locations throughout California and around the world beginning in late April (stay tuned for all the dates) and will debut right here at WhatYouth.com on May 1.

After the jump you'll find more images and an update from the editing dungeon where Victor Pakpour and Kai are holed up, bouncing their heads in headphones and manipulating imagery for your viewing pleasure. [...]

A CANDID CONVERSATION WITH TANNER GUDAUSKAS FROM WHAT YOUTH ISSUE 3

In What Youth Issue 3 we speak to a lot of humans, including Shane Dorian, Gavin Beschen, Kelly Slater, Ben Nordberg, Steven Grasse and more. One of the most interesting people we spoke to was Tanner Gudauskas, who is obviously one of the most likable souls on the planet — but we found him in between things: stuck somewhere between competing and freesurfing, between his two amazing brothers, between girls, wondering what path to take. And Tanner is no freewheeling gypsy like you may think. He's a thinker. A philosopher. A poet. And a serious fan of surfing. We had an interesting breakfast during the making of Issue 3, which is where you'll find the entire interview. After the jump is an excerpt from a very candid chat with one of our favorite conversationalists, Tanner Gudauskas. [...]

THE EXPLODING PLASTIC INEVITABLE INDUSTRY PARTY WE THREW A PARTY IN AUSTRALIA FOR ISSUE 3 AND THESE ARE THE ONLY MEMORIES THAT REMAIN

Parties need themes. And unique soundtracks. And girls. And balloons. As we brainstormed themes for our issue 3 launch party in Australia, we landed on something between a gothic birthday party and Andy Warhol thanks to this this piece of history, which inevitably became our theme and soundtrack. We bought a bunch of wine, silver balloons, things that sparkled, lucked into some Marilyn Monroe material as a photo backdrop (which is currently being fashioned into backpacks by the one and only Napkin Apocalypse), put on some trippy visuals, a washed out and raw soundtrack, sprinkled copies of What Youth Issue 3 throughout the building and let the kids do the rest.

After the jump you'll find a delicious sampling of the fun, shot by by our friends at Life Without Andy. [...]
