COLLECTED THOUGHTS 004 KOLOHE AT THE RACK
Thu

May
Kolohe thrifting in New South Wales, because vintage is the RAGE. Why get endless free shit from your industry-leading global sportswear sponsor, when you can pay good money for a used musty button-down that someone might have died in?

 Hey, sick shirt though.
  • The film releases mid-July for the reasonable price of no money. Maybe the best dollars you'll never spend.
  • Freestone. Not sure why Jack would choose pink rails here, but since he probably sent two hot girls home in a cab this morning and then blew fins until sunset, it doesn't really matter.
  • No barrels were dodged in the making of the film. Dylan Longbottom.
  • Remember when Brad Pitt played Taj in that Fincher movie about Taj's life, where he ages backward, and just gets younger and radder and bags Cate Blanchett? People were like, "What a fun fantasy film!" And Taj was all, "Yeah, totally…fantasy film…" It won Oscars.
  • This photo probably hurts to look at from an office, or a desk, as life slips away in pursuit of taxable income, because what a waste of that peeling right. But hey, the wave is only empty because there aren't enough people out to catch them all. Does that make it better?
  • So if you're a Californian with a wife or daughter age 16 to 34 — or even a young-looking 40 if she keeps fit, maybe through regular yoga — send the girls away, now, on an extended vacation somewhere cold and asexual. Jack Freestone is coming to town for the summer, including the July release of Daze At Sea. He's the star.
  • All-black short-arm, no traction pad, no-grab air with last night's wristband still on…damn, Creed McTaggart is the thing to be.
  • Ian Gentil was minuscule until he sprouted like a weed this year, so now he has to do grownup things like shave and crouch for the barrel. Youth is fleeting.
  • We tried our best to read the text on Peterson Crisanto's board here but just couldn't figure it out. It probably says something like, \\\"Sure I do slob rotations in thick surf that calls for a round-pin tail, take my picture and pay me.\\\"
  • Flaunting a Mayhem this new and shiny, this Crest Whitestrip hue, that was probably at the glasser five minutes ago and probably one of a dozen Ian has on ice because pros just roll that deep, well…thanks dad, youth league soccer was a brilliant call for me.
  • Daze At Sea will be released for free download on July 15, 2012. Plan that month accordingly.
The film releases mid-July for the reasonable price of no money. Maybe the best dollars you'll never spend.

These shots are from the Australian sessions for Daze At Sea — just a small sample from the three months director Vic Pakpour spent down there logging sessions and spreading the rumor he's a sitcom star in California.

Photos by the all-day smile factory known as Pat Stacy. Surfing by members of the Billabong team both young and youngish.
COLLECTED THOUGHTS 005 DILLON GOT KEYED
Tue

May
This was after Dillon’s rental car got keyed in a Yamba parking lot while he was surfing. The keyer’s total lack of ingenuity is what was most disappointing. He could have taken his vandalism in so many directions.

Like, he could have been clever and scratched “MY BACK,” or been artsy and written a sonnet, or been subtle and drawn directions back to the highway. He could have been direct and written, “Dillon, in the future, surf another place rather [...]
DION AGIUS, PART 1 A WHAT YOUTH DOCUMENTARY SERIES
Tue

May
At 26, Dion has practically become an entire pro surfing genre unto himself. He's as remarkable out of the water as he is on a surfboard.
  • Some cool boats Blake [Myers, filmer] and I found on a little photo hunt. I really like the name Self Help.
  • A cool wall we found on that same photo hunt. I like the colors and art, I feel like I’ve seen it somewhere before.
  • The trip was full of this. Pulling up to spots, sitting, watching, pulling the pin and heading off elsewhere. Blake being a badass, Nate being over it.
  • Terry, our guide and friend in Barbados. Thanks boss, you made it easy.
  • A spot we ate at for Mitch's birthday. Looks like paradise if sun-baking, swimming and drinking is your thing.
  • Kai is always gathering great film. Can't wait to see how this comes out, at one point the baby sheep swings around and chases Kai.
  • Stampede.
  • And John with the intercept.
  • This is at an old rundown hotel. It's crazy how big this place is and the location is perfect. I guess the hurricanes destroyed it years ago.
  • Unsafe.
  • The surf check at John John’s secret left!
  • Barbados is a really colorful place. Every house is a different color, the water is blue and the land is green.
  • Decisions were tough…“There's gotta be somewhere better, let’s check the next bay."
BARBADOS BY CHIPPA WORDS AND PHOTOS BY CHIPPA WILSON

Chippa really has an eye, two eyes actually, yellow eyes, catlike.

He surfs catlike too, in the third prequel to Dear Suburbia, for instance, where he does some feline maneuvering on a surfboard, in Barbados, which is also where he shot and captioned these photos.

More from Barbados in the first issue of What Youth Quarterly available from whatyouth.com in June, and in Dear Suburbia, which is being edited right this very moment [...]
  • Ha, goats are the dogs of Barbados. They’re everywhere. This one me and Chippa shot double angles.
  • This guy came out of the bushes from an abandoned hotel and wanted to give us the magic water. Nate made a new friend.
  • The abandoned hotel. Nothing left to do except capture the moment.
  • It’s kind of weird to think of what it may have been like back in the day.
  • The bushes guy with the magic water again. We taught him shakas.
  • Another view of the old pool.
  • Shooting 35mm film in a medium-format camera always comes out pretty cool.
  • Some of the big random rocks in front of our house.
  • Kai and Chippa figuring out if we should try to surf the wrong-winded closing out right. Then this was the last photo on my roll and I figured the weird old car would be cool to end it.

The day after we posted the Barbados prequel to Dear Suburbia, we were on the phone to John John.

The first thing he said was, "How's that edit you did of me you fuckers?"

Anyway, here's some photos he took and captioned for us from the trip.
COLLECTED THOUGHTS 006 SUGARLOAF DIARIES

Poetry is dead. The web clip killed surfing. What's a blowtail? The barrel is back. Big-budget soundtracks. Bill fucking Murray. It's a spiced rum. The mountains are purple and the red wine is uncorked.

Kai's nearly finished the rough edit of Dear Suburbia, which we'll preview here at the studio in a matter of days. He's been locked away in a remote cabin just outside the city of Sugarloaf, CA cutting film day and night.

For those who can't make it to HB for [...]
