Coolangatta in its autumn can be a humane society, by which ironically I mean an inhuman sort of animal society. Especially for the surfer. Lots of girls and lots of waves, but you catch something from the girls, and you never catch the waves, so either way it's a good time to leave.

Jack Freestone lives there, Evan G. was staying at Jack's, and Dillon Perillo was visiting too. When the Gold Coast started to be too much they gathered [...]

Dillon, Evan and Jack needed a brief escape. The Queensland points can really spoil at peak season when the human-to-wave ratio hits 10 so one day the boys packed and merged onto Route 1, going south.

That chair to Mitch's left looks almost like it was inspired by the Bertoia Diamond Lounge chair, a midcentury classic designed by Harry Bertoia.

The main difference is that this chair here is wood, whereas the Diamond Lounge was wire mesh and pioneered the use of that material in modern furniture design. It made Bertoia something of a design celebrity the way Mitch is something of a surf celebrity. Diamond Lounges today sell for around $1000.

In light of our releasing the Temporary Vacation short this week, we asked Dillon to write the story of that road trip, from Coolangatta south to Yamba, as he remembers it. He did, but I think he's also making fun of us. Anyway here it is.

It all began as I was lying on my friend's leather couch in Kirra when I received a call from Yamba asking me to come over.

The annual event called Kustom Airstrike is really simple this year: they put five surfers on a boat in the Mentawais for 10 days and best air gets fifty thousand dollars. It's happening now and we have men there on the boat to document all flight activity.
