DEAR YOUTH THE MAKING OF A NEW WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SERIES

We’re currently in Australia filming for a new What Youth film series called This Is Us. So far, in the first two days we've survived the 50-year storm. Had a late night skate session fueled by the lights on our cars, searched every nook and cranny along this section of Australian coast and met some quality surfers. Let’s start with Ryan Callinan, who’s featured above with a nasty whip in front of prehistoric rock. Ryan is polite, he does dishes, he’s super positive, not obsessed with his phone and is more surf psyched than anyone we’ve ever met — which believe it or not are all very rare qualities. He’s #theboys — and is single handedly bringing back the high five. The second is Creed McTaggart, a Western Australian bad ass with the gentlest of demeanors. He’s the guy you want in the car. He’s soft spoken but has the timing of a comedian. He’s got a Pink Panther tattoo and is full of rad stories and insight at just the right time. The guy loves Mitch Hedberg. He also says rad shit out of nowhere, like, “Dammit! I left my mojo in the other car!” There's also Fox’s newest team rider Chippa Wilson, who continues to prove there is no one more right now on the face of the earth. Between his rock and roll’s in the skatepark, to his ridiculous pull ratio during free surfs, Chippa maintains his reputation as the coolest kid at school. The fourth surfer we have is Dillon Perillo. Dillon spends most of his day debating existence and reading quotes from the novels he’s reading. Just a man and his search for meaning in a meaningless world. We love him. (More after the jump) [...]

COLLECTED THOUGHTS 036 CHIPPA'S NEW STICKERS

This morning at 6:30 a.m. I heard someone out on the deck, scraping wax and drinking coffee. The sun was just starting to peak around the morning clouds and it was quiet aside from the prehistoric dinosaur birds that lose their minds in the Australian morning. Chippa Wilson had begun the process of stickering up his boards with brand new, white Fox stickers.

So let's make it official: Chippa has been put on the reinvigorated Fox program alongside Bruce Irons and Bede Durbidge, rounding out a super well-balanced program. "It feels like I can do something now," he said as he scissored and cut the new logos. Chippa has been sponsorless for a couple months after Analog scrapped their surf and skate programs at the end of 2012. It was a damn shame to see someone as sick as Chippa flying around on white boards, but that is no more. This morning we surfed a really fun beachbreak, dodged sharks and it was Chippa and the Fox logo leading the way with his ditches.

Dillon Perillo put it best this morning as he watched Chippa put the logos on, "That's pretty weird, like, Fox is sick now. Marketing is so weird." —Travis [...]

DEAR YOUTH FUCK HENRY MILLER

There is a beautiful home in Australia that is now inhabited by us. Nine of us. It has several bedrooms. A beautiful deck. A gas Weber barbecue. Kitschy photos of Waikiki, Santa Monica, Tahiti and other surfing “meccas.” We are here surfing, drinking, skating, talking, grilling, and reading poetry together because we saw a film called Shelter that was based on a similar premise: a house of dudes surfing and hanging out…only we wanted to fuck it up a bit. So we brought a few new characters to our version. One chain-smokes and doesn't have a clue how actually bad ass he is. One is freshly inked with a new sponsor, a fuck-ton of tattoos and the most technically perfect approaches in surfing. Another has a backhand whip that is so committed he makes you want to be better at whatever it is you do. And the other is Dillon. (Continued after the jump.) [...]

DISFIRE A VERY UNSAFE VIDEO, JUST FOR YOU

Since most people spend the majority of their waking lives at desks inside stucco industrial complexes, surrounded by rules and regulations and professionalism, it is with great pleasure that we present this video to you with the drab tag: NSFW — which means it's not safe for you to play it in your office because your HR department is watching your every browse and if they know you're watching this then they'll have to tell your boss and he'll have to have a sit down and talk about time management and appropriate behavior and how you've been really slacking and he needs you on Saturday and then you'll go sing happy birthday to some lady in the lunch room and pass cake around and sing to all the depressing people, then you'll be 50 and...well, if this applies to you, or you're even remotely familiar with this situation, quit, and go watch this, before it's too late. Be reckless. If even just for today.

He shot the photos. Did the interview. Transcribed it. Edited it. Got it in on time. And managed to produce one of the most fascinating interviews we've read in a long time. After the jump, Dane explains how it came together and offers up a small sample of the interview from the mag. [...]

Along side being a co-founder DC and building the Incase brand, Damon Way, for the past couple of decades, has immersed himself in the obscure sounds of forgotten bands and overlooked genres. He brought his ear, and record collection, to this issue in "Notes From The Underground," an '80s-based (Post Punk, Minimal Synth and Cold Wave) selection from Damon's personal stacks. After the jump, Enjoy with the maddening enthusiasm of a happy child... The selection will not disappoint! [...]

So you might have heard us talking about What Youth Issue 3 lately and how it's out and rad and all that...well, please pardon our excitement, but we're fucking psyched on it. Anywho, it features some photos of Dane Reynolds and Craig Anderson in Mexico recently. The trip was last minute and Dane was only able to attend for two days, but when he was there, he managed to go pretty looney at this very secret (not going to name it) spot in Mexico. It's a right. It's as fun as waves get. After the jump you'll find an endless brick road of images from the trip that will allow you to live a better, more fulfilling existence. Click now and start scrolling for enlightenment to commence. And by all means, dance.  [...]

DEAR YOUTH A NOTE FROM LAX

There's a small bar in this terminal and it's filled with all those sad looks that people usually have in airports, bad sandwiches and ice cold beers. I've just met up with What Youth filmer and team psyche-leader Victor Pakpour. He travels with the most hideous piece of luggage you've ever seen. He says it's easy to find in foreign ports. It's massive and floral and he just fills it with gear and clothes and grins through LAX. While in Australia Victor will be grabbing some last minute footage for Reef and What Youth's film collaboration Anything Sing, which will be out this Spring. There's swell, star power and blue water waiting. Myself, Kai and heaps of surf dudes will be venturing up the coast, posting up on the beach and filming a brand new series for this here website. Expect radness. And according to the forecast, there's a good chance we'll be disregarding a good amount of responsibility and surfing our brains out. And don't worry, we've got a good amount of entertainment in store for you this week while we get settled in Australia, including some sneak peeks inside What Youth Issue 3, which is now available in the What Youth Shop. As for us, we're boarding our flight. —Travis [...]

Dear Lovers,

What Youth Issue 3 is now available for purchase inside the What Youth Shop.

On the cover: Nathan Fletcher, photographed by Mark Oblow.

Nathan has been one of the most inspirational figures in the creation of What Youth since before we knew it would even exist. Since he was punting in his dad's videos at 12, through These Colors Taste Like Music and all the incredible feats he's accomplished since, we can honestly say, without a doubt he's the most interesting, real, genuine, authentic, core, humble and talented person we've had the pleasure of hanging out with. Enjoy the issue. [...]
