THE DEVIL'S TEETH THE AUTEURS: RILEY BLAKEWAY

Sometimes things don't go as planned. Sometimes the water turns brown and it rains all day and dead cows wash up onto the shark infested beach you're surfing. And if you're there to document this, and you're Riley Blakeway, you're stoked, because something unique has happened. You have a hook. It is usually your nightmare and your dream come true all at once. And if you're lucky, as Riley seems to have been, the guys you're there filming take a look at those same conditions and decide to go fucking looney in the muddy water. And that always helps.

This is called The Devil's Teeth and stars Chippa Wilson, Nate Tyler and Brendon Gibbens. It is Riley Blakeway's contribution to the vault of our new series: The Auteurs and it is very well done.  [...]

THE AUTEURS INTERVIEW WITH RILEY BLAKEWAY ABOUT HIS SHORT FILM PREMIERING TOMORROW: THE DEVIL'S TEETH

PHOTOS: Nate Lawrence

In our second installment of the new series The Auteurs we feature Riley Blakeway in a short he made during a stint on the east coast of Australia.

Riley’s short is entitled The Devil’s Teeth and sheds light onto the challenge of creating a surf film utilizing the conditions you’re given and making the most of it.

On this trip in particular — which features Chippa Wilson, Nate Tyler and Brendon Gibbens — torrential rains, flooding and evil-looking water created an interesting backdrop for Riley to work with, although an unexpected one. After the jump he explains the trip and how to keep an open mind, even when your new RED camera is psyching for slow-motion and blue water.

Come back tomorrow to watch Riley Blakeway’s new short film: The Devil’s Teeth. [...]

COMING FRIDAY: THE DEVIL'S TEETH A WHAT YOUTH SHORT BY RILEY BLAKEWAY — PART OF THE AUTEUR'S SERIES

PHOTOS: Lawrence

Jumping sharks and fish and surfers in Australia.

Today is a photographic glimpse at the setting for Friday’s new film by Riley Blakeway called The Devil’s Teeth, which is part of our new series, The Auteurs. Tomorrow we’ll give you some info from Riley on the making of the film. Today, we get a photographic glimpse at the waves and area.

This trip along the East Coast of Australia with Nate Tyler, Chippa Wilson and Brendon Gibbens was greeted with chocolate water and massive ramps, boiling over the top of some rather sharky water. But thanks to that, Riley was given a rare opportunity as the spot looked entirely unique from how it usually does. Rare foam developed and the town's usually crystal clear swimming pool was coated in sludge and constantly dredged. Livestock and dead animals washed onto the beach and served as a constant reminder of the cafeteria they were surfing in. As you’ll see though, no one seemed too bothered. The boys ripped.

Above is a full-screen slideshow gallery of images taken by Nate Lawrence during filming.  [...]

THIS IS US: JERK OFF TAPES THIS IS AN ABSTRACT PRESENTATION TAKEN FROM OUR HANDY CAMS DURING FILMING FOR THIS IS US: AUSTRALIA

Surf culture isn't polished. It's not cut out for primetime. And anyone who's ever chucked surfboards into the back of a van knows what type of conversations go down on surf trips. We have all the ...lost videos and watch them to this day. And while we hope you enjoyed This Is Us: Australia and all the good surfing and poetic shots and cutaways, we had to sign off with something a touch more..ummm, raw. This was inspired by creepy, shoulder-mount cams from the '90s. Hit play and do remember to fuck around as often as you can. We're surfers. And we're lucky. And this is a surf trip. Be sure to listen for Dillon Perillo's very candid confession... [...]

THIS IS US: AUSTRALIA PART 4 OF THE WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SERIES

There is a lot of chaos cluttering our brains these days. Texts prevent pondering. Snapchats prevent reverie. Twitter prevents epiphany. Instagram prevents memory. And thunderstorms prevent brainstorms. And on and on.

It’s difficult to get true commitment — let alone ponder the fact that beyond our instantaneously gratified society there are canyons in the oceans where vampire fish live; or meditate for a moment on the fact that there is space. How can one ponder space when it’s nearly impossible to initiate a real conversation? Warrant a look in the eyes or an earnest response? It is easy to track someone today, yes. It is hard, however, to elicit anything of substance as we walk around like the texting dead.

Which leads us to the motivation behind this trip we did to the coast and why we chose these surfers: Creed McTaggart, Chippa Wilson, Ryan Callinan and Dillon Perillo. We wanted to remind ourselves of something. Something about existence. About humanity. About surfing. This is part four of This is Us: Australia and we hope you like it. We got a house, drank beers, went surfing, drove around, fucked around and talked about chicks. Ryan wore his wetsuit the whole damn trip and Creed had a few cigarettes. Dillon read poetry and Chippa applied fresh Fox stickers for the first time. It's wasn't always deep and meaningful (although at times it was) but it was fun, and this is what it looked like.

Coming Next Monday: A bonus section from This is Us: Australia featuring outtakes from the trip that will ultimately prove we've lost it. [...]

THIS IS US: AUSTRALIA PART 2 OF THE WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SERIES

We dealt with a ton of rain during filming for this series. It hampered surfs, made us chase our tail, wiped skating off the list for many days and poured chocolate milk colored water into the lineups. But it didn't come without fun too. Locked indoors for the evening, we'd sip on red and play cards, shit talk, read poetry books and watched skate videos. We actually learned some shit. The waves we'd find every morning were always different. Weird shorebreak with no other people even thinking of going out. Then we'd paddle out because funny wipeouts were inevitable and there was always the odd chance that someone might find a Danny Way sized mega-ramp. We surfed a ton right through all the rain. And that's just how it was. No one complained. This is episode two. Enjoy. [...]

THIS IS US: AUSTRALIA PART 1 OF THE NEW WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SERIES

The concept for the This Is Us series is simple: grab surfers we like to hangout with, put them in a house, go surfing a ton and record it, to show what it's like on a trip. Our first trip for the series features Creed McTaggart, Chippa Wilson, Dillon Perillo and Ryan Callinan in a wave rich region in Australia. The house was filled with books, wine, food, beer, boards, skateboards and good tunes. We faced the storm of the century for the first two days and after it passed found a variety of wedges, ramps and this anomaly of a right that's featured above, which according to locals is rarely rideable, but it turned on for Ryan, Dillon and Creed  in part 1.

Be sure to tune back every Monday this month for new episodes of This is Us: Australia. [...]

On Monday we'll be releasing episode 1 of the new show This is Us: Australia. Above is a gallery of our week, infesting a house in Australia. Over the course of that week, Creed McTaggart become our new muse. Dillon Perillo pondered existence daily with readings from Henry Miller's book Tropic of Capricorn and offered up daily Bukowski poetry recitals. Ryan Callinan proved to everyone that his backhand whip is the real deal. And Chippa Wilson debuted his new Fox logos and demonstrated why he's the most contemporary aerial surfer in the game. We had a shit ton of fun, as you'll see come Monday in episode 1.
