BEAUTY POCKETS THE WORLD IS A FUCKED UP PLACE WITH POCKETS OF BEAUTY

Next week Epokhe will be releasing a new short film called Beauty Pockets, which you'll be able to see right here at What Youth. Today though, we thought we'd give you a glimpse behind the scenes of the trip, which you can find accompanied by the beautiful photography of John Respondek and Grady Archbold in What Youth Issue 3.

After the jump, have a read of the story Kai Neville penned for What Youth Issue 3 as well as a ton of behind the scenes imagery. [...]

CUTTING ROOM FLOOR ISSUE 3 FILM OUTCASTS

Here's a photo teaser of images — all of which happen to be shot on film — that won't be making the cut for Issue 3.

We're on the final stretch before sending our third book to the printer and noticed how much interesting imagery we've been getting that's shot on actual film. It's rad to slow the consumption and the shooting process down, and film gives you no other option. Less opportunities to shoot forces you to focus on what you're shooting and usually creates a much more interesting photograph. It sounds pretentious to talk about shooting film. we get that, but the fact of the matter is that it reminds you exactly what it is your'e doing when you take a photo, as opposed to just snapping away and opening Photoshop after. It forces you to pay attention. It feels like a step in the direction of slowing down our double click lifestyle so that we can't actually enjoy something, whether it be an image, a book, a movie or an album. Go buy a disposable camera today and try it for yourself. [...]

COLLECTED THOUGHTS 034 OLD FASHIONED ROAD TRIP DOWN THE SOUTH COAST OF AUSTRALIA

PHOTO: Neville

A mix of young and old, hunting for onshore reefs but also rising before sunrise in search of golden light. Are we getting old? I remember filming for Modern Collective, the photographer would bang his tripod on the ground, accidentally knock your mattress at first light and roust you awake. We wanted no crowds and onshore beach breaks, he wanted golden light silhouettes and offshore winds. If we had risen then, we may have scored incredible photos, instead we slept, hunting clips and ramps.

We are currently driving down the south coast of Australia, it's the first surf trip for Epokhe where co-founders Dion Agius, Mitch Coleborn and myself loaded up a variety of cameras, boards and newly signed ambassador Creed Mctaggart.

This is more than just a trip, we have an underlying need to do something special. Hence the 4 a.m. wake ups. Are we old with a new appreciation for light, does Creed think we are fucken lunatics? Maybe we are, I'm torn.

Amongst a certain anxiety to make sure we dont burn through all our money getting skunked on this fickle Australian coast, we are shooting burnt out forests, skating, gambling on the dogs, shooting more, fucking around and trying to do things you should on a team trip. Nothing better than ending the day at a small Australian pub, Coopers on tap, working with friends has never been better. Be sure to get psyched for What Youth issue 3 where you can dive in and see what we make. —Kai [...]

WHAT YOUTH'S TOP FIVE VIDEOS OF 2012 NUMBER 5: DEAR SUBURBIA PREQUEL IV: NEW ZEALAND

This is a bit different. It's not normal to rank your own videos, we realize that, but we're going to do it anyway. Mostly because it's been just as much fun making this stuff as we hope it is to watch. And we'd like to spend the last few days of 2012 highlighting a few videos we had a particular good time making. We'll count them down from five and hit play on our favorite New Year's day. And after that, we'll officially be kicking off 2013 and a whole host of new projects, films, videos, photos, trips, parties, events, and fun. But now, a look back.

Coming in at number 5 is Prequel IV from Dear Suburbia. This launched the first 100 percent, official surf trip for What Youth. Dane, Craig, Dion and Conner hit the road and were promptly skunked for two weeks, which led to a wild night on the beers in the local college town ("It's Uni night tonight!") in an effort to turn the luck. And as we've learned from experience, it did. The boys promptly stumbled upon ramps and pits pushed up against a medieval backdrop and the rest is Dear Suburbia and What Youth history.  [...]

MEET BRENDON GIBBENS A POLITE YOUNG MAN WITH A FUCKED UP ALLEY OOP

A while back Brendon Gibbens came through What Youth and sat on our couch. He was tagging along with Dion Agius and Craig Anderson. He was very polite and friendly. Everyone was skating around the warehouse talking shit and hanging out. We had no idea Brendon even surfed.

Cut to a few months later in France: Passing through on his way to Iceland Brendon came and hung out with us for a few days and we got a chance to sit down and officially meet the real man. Turns out he can surf. Really damn well. He has a charming South African accent, unassuming demeanor and one of the wildest alley-oop stomps we've seen. And underground appeal that we love. Remember that spelling.  [...]

JEAN A WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SHORT FILM BY KAI NEVILLE
"Humanity is fascinating. The more landlocked you get, the more bizarre things seem to get. Jean is a point-and-shoot style film documenting things and people that were interesting to me while on the road for the Dear Suburbia tour. I would have a few beers and watch people through the lens as we traveled across America." [...]

JEAN: A FACTUAL SHORT FILM BY KAI NEVILLE (TEASER) TODAY THE TEASER, TOMORROW THE FILM

This past summer we did something we've always wanted to do: we drove across the heartland of America and we documented every sketchy detail. We took surfers, skaters, Americans, Australians and women. The trip was a sweaty cockfight of celebratory nights on the town and endless drives through nowhere. Every night we premiered Dear Suburbia at a new surf shop, and following the credits we'd careen into the streets with our new friends to find the essence of the American night in some of America's most interesting towns.

Be sure to come back tomorrow for the premiere of Jean, only at What Youth dot com. [...]

BEHIND THE LENS OF EPOKHE SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE OF AMERICA

Epokhe is a new sunglass brand that Dion Agius, Mitch Coleborn and Kai Neville have dreamt up. Being's how Kai is a founder of What Youth and works here, we had the pleasure of watching this shoot for the line come together. It was a relatively normal day, couple meetings, a few kick flips in the back, surf at lunch etc. In between all of that Dion and Kai had a few phone calls:

"Yeah, sweet, pick me up on your way to the airport," Kai said to Dion finally.

And just like that, as we all packed up and went home for the evening, Kai and Dion and our good friend Grady Archbold went to the deserted desert somewhere in the middle of America, shot the sunrise with these models and returned the next day with magical imagery and film. All in 12 hours. Kai was back in here like nothing happened the next day.

Check out this behind the scenes video and be sure to peruse the site and get some sunnies at www.epokhe.co [...]

COLLECTED THOUGHTS 028 DAY ONE IN FRANCE WITH DION

PHOTO: Neville

Little did they know that this would be one of the only successful surfs of the trip. Kai and Dion were to meet up with Craig and Dane but had one free day while those two took the opportunity to rip Wave Garden, the fake European wave in Spain.

Walking up this day, Dion and Kai — who left his camera behind, only bringing along a wettie, Neck Beard and his Yashica T4 — found a stretch [...]

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DION AGIUS FOR ISSUE TWO FROM DION'S SUMMER PORTFOLIO, A SELECTION OF HIS PHOTOS AND WORDS

[Hover for captions]

"I'm in Europe, heading to Iceland tomorrow for Globe, going to be so goddamn cold! Then I'm back to France for two weeks, then Berlin for a week, then New York, then Maine, then back to LA, then home to Byron for summer [Northern Hemisphere's winter]. Can't wait!"

That's from an email Dion sent us last week.

I think it helps illustrate how [...]
