WAKE UP, IT'S OVER A DAY IN JAPAN WORTH PINCHING YOURSELF OVER
An original What Youth short film featuring Yadin Nicol, Conner Coffin, Dane Reynolds and Kolohe Andino dodging typhoons and enjoying the aftermath: a machine-like sand point breaking just off the beach. All before going on to create their own storm in the streets of Osaka.

For more from Japan, watch the first Prequel to Dear [...]

CUTTING ROOM FLOOR ISSUE 3 FILM OUTCASTS

Here's a photo teaser of images — all of which happen to be shot on film — that won't be making the cut for Issue 3.

We're on the final stretch before sending our third book to the printer and noticed how much interesting imagery we've been getting that's shot on actual film. It's rad to slow the consumption and the shooting process down, and film gives you no other option. Less opportunities to shoot forces you to focus on what you're shooting and usually creates a much more interesting photograph. It sounds pretentious to talk about shooting film. we get that, but the fact of the matter is that it reminds you exactly what it is your'e doing when you take a photo, as opposed to just snapping away and opening Photoshop after. It forces you to pay attention. It feels like a step in the direction of slowing down our double click lifestyle so that we can't actually enjoy something, whether it be an image, a book, a movie or an album. Go buy a disposable camera today and try it for yourself. [...]

ONE SESSION: KOLOHE ANDINO KOLOHE'S BARREL TO AIR TRANSITION GAME ON DISPLAY

Western Australia has become an aerialist and a barrel riders heaven. Wild winds of all directions, slabs, reefs, tubes and more corner pocket ramps than you know what to do with. It's easy to see why guys like Kolohe and John John are making this a must stop for gathering clips. The boys love it here.

You'd probably feel pretty good washing this session down with a local glass of rouge and a steak. Although Kolohe prefers ginger beer.

SINCERELY, SUBURBIA A WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL FILM

Sincerely Suburbia is our final salute to a film and a moment in time we're rather fond of. And damn is it a pretty little thing. Shot around the globe in 2012, this is an almost 10-minute film pulled from the Dear Suburbia cutting room floor. But being that Kai is notoriously picky during editing his films, it doesn't feel like an after thought at all. It stars Dane Reynolds, Kolohe Andino, Conner Coffin, Jay Davies and Mitch Coleborn with cameos by Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow and Cory Lopez.  [...]

PHOTOS FROM SINCERELY SUBURBIA TAKEN DURING FILMING FOR THE WHAT YOUTH FILM SINCERELY SUBURBIA

Kai is notoriously picky when it comes to clips that make it into his film. His cutting room floor is filled with puddles of banger clips and rad shit that just doesn't fit into the films. Which is a bummer, but only until he releases stuff like this. Tomorrow we'll be premiering Sincerely Suburbia, the final farewell to an incredible film, year and chapter in our lives.

So as we sign off from this chapter and film with Sincerely Suburbia, we'd like to remind you that this is the beginning of the most exciting part of what we do: hitting the road and starting all over again. Which we're doing immediately, already filling hard drives with visions of late nights and long flight and tons of surfing. Don't forget to come along every day, right here at What Youth. After the jump you'll enjoy an overwhelming amount of images shot by Nate Lawrence, Dion Agius and Craig Anderson. [...]

SINCERELY, SUBURBIA COMING TO WHAT YOUTH NEXT WEEK

In celebration of Dear Suburbia's success in 2012 (2012 Surfer Poll Film of the Year, Dane Reynolds' Performance of the Year etc), Kai has made a beautiful sign off short film called Sincerely, Suburbia that we'll be premiering only on What Youth next week. Kai is notoriously picky and critical when editing his films and the amount of rad stuff left on the cutting room floor is crazy. We're quite certain you'll enjoy it.

It will be the final sign off from Dear Suburbia and will signify the end of that film and the beginning of Kai and What Youth's next run of films, projects, magazines and trips and what promises to be a wild and lucky 2013. [...]

WHAT YOUTH MEMOIRS TO BEGIN, BEGIN. WELCOME TO 2013.

What Youth was born in 2012, and it makes us misty thinking about all the fun we had last year. But it's only just begun. We currently just got home from a magical spirit quest into the rough and tumble Pacific Northwest and are packing those same bags that were filled with jackets and 5/4/3's and skateboards in exchange for trunks and sunscreen and heading for somewhere much, much warmer. Our bed's were nice last night, but it's time to keep moving. [...]

WHAT YOUTH'S TOP FIVE VIDEOS OF 2012 NUMBER 2: DEAR SUBURBIA, PREQUEL I: JAPAN
We left super last minute, after everyone said we shouldn't go and we'd be miserable sitting in a typhoon, drove all night, found tons of waves thanks to Shuji Kasuya (the most stylish and polite and amazing man walking around out there on earth), played with fireworks, hung out in the steam baths, ate Sunkust, [...]

THE BOYS FIN DITCHES IN HAWAII SET TO COLD CAVE

Something to motivate. If this doesn't make you wanna go ditch the fins with your friends today then nothing will. Jack Freestone, Kolohe Andino, Julian Wilson, John John Florence, Balaram Stack and Yadin Nicol flying around during a much less intense couple of days in Hawaii, all set to a rad Cold Cave tune.

Hit play, then chuck your stuff in the truck, it looks fun. [...]

OFF BEAT: KOLOHE ANDINO A WHAT YOUTH ORIGINAL SERIES BROUGHT TO YOU BY SKULLCANDY

Our Issue 2 cover model and cover shooter (it's a self portrait), Kolohe Andino, is an interesting specimen. He's as curious and thoughtful as they come, usually snarky and mischievous in the process, but endearing as all hell. Here he grinds through our Off Beat questions and offers some pretty unique insights into the young man's mind. You'll also notice there's some crazy surfing going on in there.

Oh, and for those at home, the definition of "Copious" is: (adjective) Abundant in supply or quantity.

And just like that you're learning and ripping with Kolohe Andino on a Monday. [...]
